House Committee Chair Tim Burchett Targets $1 Trillion in Federal Waste with Anti-Fraud Initiative

Stella Green, January 31, 2026

Rep. Tim Burchett, R-Tenn., has identified potential federal waste and fraud costing taxpayers nearly $1 trillion, according to his announcement as chair of the new DOGE Committee.

In a statement on Saturday, Burchett emphasized his commitment to targeting duplication across government agencies and enforcing accountability rather than allowing taxpayer-funded oversight efforts to collect dust. “A bunch of stupid reports that cost the taxpayers millions of dollars,” he said, comparing the situation to the final scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark.”

Burchett, who has served in Congress for eight years, noted that he has never read a report produced by the committee’s oversight efforts. He plans to bring investigators and watchdog agencies before Congress to review existing findings and craft legislation directly tied to cost savings.

The committee chair also highlighted upcoming focus areas including major welfare and Medicaid fraud cases in states such as Minnesota, California, and New York. “There will be no sacred cows in this game,” Burchett warned, adding that wasteful spending is driving the national debt toward unsustainable levels.

“We’re $38 trillion — we’ll be $40 trillion before long,” he said, expressing concern about the nation’s financial trajectory. “When does it end? It ends when we fall off the cliff, and when we fall off the cliff, it’s too dadgum late.”

Burchett also mentioned potential collaboration with Elon Musk, who recently spearheaded an executive branch effort to identify billions in potential savings. Musk has raised concerns about federal dollars circulating through nonprofits and returning to politicians via indirect channels.

“The problem,” Burchett said, “is a circuitous route of this money going from the taxpayers’ back pockets to these NGOs, and coming right back to the politicians.”

The committee chair stressed that rooting out fraud requires more than reports and hearings — it demands prosecutions. “Look, we need somebody in cuffs,” he said. “And that’s what America wants.”
