Secret Service Detains Man Who Vandalized VP Vance’s Ohio Home

Stella Green, January 5, 2026

U.S. Secret Service officials detained a man early Monday who broke windows at Vice President JD Vance’s Ohio home and caused other property damage, according to agency spokesperson Anthony Guglielmi.

The suspect was apprehended shortly after midnight near Vance’s residence in Cincinnati’s Walnut Hills neighborhood. Law enforcement officials, speaking anonymously, confirmed the individual used a hammer to break a window and attempted entry into the home. The man also vandalized a Secret Service vehicle during his approach to the property.

Vance wrote on social media: “As far as I can tell, a crazy person tried to break in by hammering the windows… We weren’t even home as we had returned already to DC.” He added that he is “skeptical of the news value of plastering images of our home with holes in the windows” and emphasized efforts to protect his family from public service realities.

William Defoor, 26, has been arrested and charged with obstructing official business, criminal damaging or endangering, criminal trespass, and vandalism. Guglielmi stated that Vance’s home was unoccupied at the time of the incident. The Secret Service is coordinating with Cincinnati Police Department and U.S. attorneys to review charging decisions.

Vance served as a U.S. senator representing Ohio before becoming vice president.
