DOJ Unveils Hundreds of Thousands of Epstein Files Amid Transparency Controversy

Stella Green, December 19, 2025

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche announced Friday that the Justice Department will release “several hundred thousand” items from Jeffrey Epstein’s files, with an additional similar volume expected within “the next couple of weeks.” The first batch will include photographs and other materials linked to all investigations into the convicted sex trafficker.

Blanche stated the disclosure fulfills President Donald Trump’s longstanding demand for transparency while criticizing Democrats for “radio silence” during the Biden administration despite their current push for immediate access to the records. He emphasized that protecting victims remains the department’s top priority, noting officials are reviewing every document to ensure names and identifying information are redacted. A New York federal judge has also mandated review by the U.S. attorney’s office to safeguard victim details prior to release.

Blanche acknowledged the DOJ will not deliver the full set of unclassified files by the deadline established under the Epstein Files Transparency Act, instead releasing a partial batch Friday with additional installments in coming weeks—a timeline some lawmakers contend violates statutory requirements. Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who championed legislation forcing this action, argued the mandates are clear and warned of penalties for noncompliance, including the need for DOJ to justify any withheld materials.

When asked if new prosecutions would follow the disclosures, Blanche clarified no additional charges related to Epstein were pending as of Friday but confirmed the matter remains under active investigation. The release occurs as statutory deadlines approach under the bipartisan law requiring disclosure of unclassified Epstein-related records while allowing victim protection redactions and preservation of ongoing investigations.
