Senate Republican Warns of Escalating Chaos as Government Shutdown Enters Critical Phase Stella Green, October 9, 2025 By Sandy Fitzgerald | Thursday, 09 October 2025 08:27 AM EDT The nation faces “a critical moment” in the ongoing government shutdown, with civilian federal workers and military personnel facing delayed paychecks, prompting Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., to urge Democrats to end the impasse. Lankford told Newsmax that civilian federal workers will not receive pay this Friday, while military members will miss their next paycheck on Wednesday. He criticized President Trump for using tariff dollars to fund the Women, Infants, and Children program but highlighted broader disruptions, including furloughed IRS agents nationwide. “There are all kinds of issues across the country,” Lankford said during “Wake Up America.” “It’s time for Democrats to finally come on board and say, OK, let’s keep the government open. This is ridiculous.” The shutdown, now in its ninth day, has repeatedly failed in the Senate, with six unsuccessful attempts to secure 60 votes for a continuing resolution. Lankford noted early signs of movement among Democrats but warned that political tactics continue to hinder progress. “There is a little bit of movement,” he said. “They continue to shut the government down and cause chaos across the country, like they’ve caused within their own party.” Lankford accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., of prioritizing the progressive wing of his party over addressing the crisis, stating Schumer would ultimately oppose any resolution. He also alleged Democrats are prolonging the shutdown to energize their base ahead of an Oct. 18 protest in Washington. “I can’t tell what the goal is other than showing they’re fighting against President Trump,” Lankford said. “Whatever Trump is for, they’re against.” On foreign policy, Lankford praised Trump’s progress on the Gaza peace deal, calling it a significant milestone for hostages held by Hamas. He expressed hope that the first group of captives could be released as early as this weekend. “Let’s get them home. Hamas cannot lead Gaza,” he said. Politics
