Minnesota Governor Condemns Use of Racial Slur After Drivers Accuse Him of Allowing ‘Somali Reshaping’

Stella Green, December 5, 2025

MINNEAPOLIS – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed deep concern Tuesday after learning that motorists passing by his home were allegedly using derogatory slurs against him, linking the incident to President Donald Trump’s recent criticism.

Speaking at a budget press conference Thursday, Governor Walz addressed this growing issue head-on while defending his own record and response to community concerns. He stated that drivers shouting these offensive remarks seemed to be echoing claims made by the president regarding thousands of Somali immigrants allegedly diverting public funds for personal gain.

Governor Walz emphasized the seriousness of the situation: “I’ve never witnessed such behavior before in my time, but now it’s becoming a regular occurrence,” he said. “It is deeply concerning.”

The comments appeared to be directly tied to President Trump’s baseless allegations that Somali community members are allegedly diverting public funds meant for Minnesota programs designed to support vulnerable populations. Walz pointed out the dangerous trend: “This creates an environment of hatred and division, not just unease – it undermines our ability as a state.”

The governor specifically criticized the lack of opposition from some political figures, noting that he has yet to receive any condemnation from Republican elected officials regarding these inflammatory remarks.

Walz explained further how Trump’s recent comments on Thanksgiving amplified this phenomenon. The president claimed there was fraud involving Minnesota nonprofits—specifically targeting organizations linked with the Somali community—and suggested residents feel unsafe because of it.

“This isn’t about politics, it is about basic human decency,” Walz stressed during his press conference. “People are being targeted based solely on their race or heritage.”

He went on to clarify that federal investigations had already found otherwise. According to court documents obtained by the governor’s office, a nonprofit network including one with Somali leadership was indeed implicated in diverting funds meant for children’s nutrition programs.

The situation has escalated significantly since November 27th when Trump claimed on his platform that “Somali gangs are roving our streets looking for ‘prey.’ We have to stop them.” Walz noted this specific reference as fueling the rise in prejudice against immigrants and minority groups.
