Pope Francis Urges Caution Regarding Venezuela

Stella Green, December 2, 2025

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis has weighed in on the political situation in Venezuela. Speaking to reporters Tuesday during a visit to the Holy See, the pontiff called on U.S. President Donald Trump not to attempt the removal of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.

Francis specifically addressed concerns surrounding the ongoing crisis in Venezuela and its implications for international relations. He emphasized respect for sovereignty and peaceful resolution of conflicts.

“In this delicate situation,” Francis said during his remarks, “I ask my brother president, Mr. Trump, to be cautious about any intervention or plan aimed at deposing a democratically elected leader.”

This statement comes as tensions rise in the region regarding U.S.-Venezuela relations. The pope’s comments are seen by many analysts as an appeal for restraint and adherence to diplomatic channels rather than unilateral actions.

The pontiff acknowledged that external involvement could exacerbate the already complex scenario unfolding in Venezuela, where Nicolás Maduro remains in power despite widespread international condemnation following accusations of electoral fraud against his opponent Juan Guaidó.
