Judi Dench Faces Challenges As Vision Fades

Oscar-winning actress Judi Dench has revealed her eyesight continues to decline, making it difficult for her to perform on stage. The 89-year-old discussed the effects of advanced macular degeneration during a recent ITV interview alongside fellow actor Ian McKellen.

When asked why she stepped away from performing, Dench stated: “I can’t see anymore. I’ve got, you know, that thing.” While able to identify shapes, she cannot make out faces. “Yes, and I can see your outline, and I know you so well,” she explained. “But I can no longer recognize anybody now.”

Dench further revealed her impaired vision prevents her from reading scripts or watching television. She noted: “I just deal with it… Get on.” Memorizing lines presents particular difficulties as she cannot read them.

Her reduced workload has been a topic in other interviews. Dench previously told reporters, “I can’t see on a film set anymore. And I can’t see to read…” Despite these challenges, the star hopes to continue performing but will need new techniques to memorize her lines.

McKellen responded jokingly during their interview about Dench’s condition: “But do you go up to total strangers and say, ‘Lovely to see you again?'”
