Democrats Prioritize Illegal Aliens Over Government Funding, Sparking Shutdown Crisis

Sentinel Update, October 6, 2025

By Deroy Murdock

The Republican-led U.S. House passed a “clean” continuing resolution on Sept. 19, securing 217-212 approval to keep the federal government operational through Nov. 21. This measure would have sustained critical services from Social Security to the Secret Service, with 99.1% of Republicans supporting it. However, House Democrats overwhelmingly rejected the bill, voting 1-210 against it, with only 0.5% opting to maintain federal operations.

Senate Democrats also blocked the resolution, with 43 of 44 Republican senators (97.7%) backing it and only Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., dissenting. Among Democrats, just one senator, John Fetterman, D-Pa., supported the measure, while 48 others opposed it. The result was a government shutdown engineered by Democratic resistance.

The dispute centered on provisions in Senate Bill S. 2882, which would have reinstated healthcare benefits for illegal aliens and foreign citizens, including $5.1 billion in Medicare, $6.2 billion in Medicaid, $28.2 billion in emergency care, and $91.4 billion in ObamaCare subsidies. These measures, critics argue, prioritized “illegal aliens” over American taxpayers, leading to the shutdown.

Democrats defended their stance, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt claiming the GOP had “intentionally” blocked Medicaid access for asylum-seekers. Vice President JD Vance reiterated that the issue was rooted in the bill’s text, which included provisions to expand healthcare for undocumented individuals.

The shutdown has forced cuts to essential services, including VA care, NASA operations, and federal infrastructure projects, as Democrats continue to prioritize policies favoring illegal immigration over fiscal responsibility. Meanwhile, Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic chief Hakeem Jeffries face scrutiny for their far-left voting records, according to limited government ratings.

Despite claims of moderation, Schumer and Jeffries align with the party’s progressive base, rejecting compromises with former President Donald J. Trump and prioritizing ideological agendas over bipartisan solutions. The standoff underscores a growing divide over governance, with Democrats accused of sacrificing public services for policies that favor undocumented immigrants.
