Grave Threat Looms Over Unborn in Virginia Following 2025 Election Results

Eugene Barnes, November 25, 2025

By Frank Pavone

The upcoming 2026 abortion rights amendment in Virginia faces a critical juncture as the state’s General Assembly passes a measure that would enshrine the right to abortion into its constitution. This development comes amid the shift in political power, with anti-abortion Gov. Glenn Youngkin, R-Va., being replaced by pro-abortion-rights advocate Abigail Spanberger. The House of Delegates, now under Democratic control, has advanced the amendment through its legislative process, ensuring it will be placed on the 2026 ballot.

The proposed constitutional amendment reads: “every individual has the fundamental right to reproductive freedom, including the ability to make and carry out decisions relating to one’s own prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, contraception, abortion care, miscarriage management, and fertility care.” This language, which lacks historical precedent in state or federal constitutions, has sparked concerns among anti-abortion advocates.

In states like Arizona, Colorado, and Missouri, the passage of similar amendments has led to significant changes in abortion laws, with some states repealing pre-Roe era restrictions. However, not all outcomes have been unfavorable, as seen in South Dakota and Florida, where voters rejected pro-abortion-rights measures. In Nebraska and New York, efforts to pass such amendments failed due to insufficient support.

The battle for Virginia’s 2026 ballot is still ongoing, with legislators set to take office on January 14. Voters are urged to contact their representatives through various channels—calls, letters, emails, social media, or in-person visits—to express opposition to the amendment. Resources and updates on this issue can be found at StateBallotMeasures.org.

Frank Pavone, an anti-abortion leader and national director of Priests for Life, emphasizes that the outcome remains in the hands of Virginia voters, urging immediate action to block the measure.
